Indigenous youth make up 6% of the Australian population, yet they account for 49% of juvenile detainees. Compared to non-Indigenous youth they are:
- Twice as likely to experience high levels of psychological distress
- Three times more likely to suicide
- 70% more likely to experience discrimination
We Are Warriors (WAW) is a social enterprise designed to have a positive and lasting impact on Indigenous youth by showing them examples of Indigenous excellence - through a digital platform, content, events and workshops. WAW’s purpose is to help Indigenous kids see it, so they can be it.

THE CONTEXT:
WAW launched its digital platform on January 26th, Australia Day, or Invasion Day to many in the Indigenous community. It is the day the British invaded and colonised Australia.
This day is significant to the community; it’s a day where Indigenous youth can feel powerless; surrounded by colonised spaces, charged-up protests and rallies. It’s also a day where non-Indigenous Australians want to show allyship but are often lost as to how.
THE TRUTH:
The charged up January 26th protests and rallies don’t leave enough space for pride and celebration of Indigenous identity and excellence.
Take a colonised space and transform it into a one that celebrates Indigenous excellence, turning a day of sorrow into one of power and positivity. On a day that the Indigenous community needs it the most.
THE IDEA:
Blak Powerhouse. An all ages, allies and advocates January 26th event, in partnership with the Powerhouse Museum. Featuring live music, dance, art, like talks, workshops, markets, food and DJs. Promoted in the community with street posters, owned social media and earned media coverage.
THE OUTCOME:The 23’ and 24’ Blak Powerhouse events hold the record for the highest event attendance in Powerhouse’s history. After the first ‘23 event, The Powerhouse Museum committed to hosting Blak Powerhouse every year on January 26th, indefinitely.
